Skylar Hawthorne

Skylar Hawthorne, LMSW, is a psychotherapist and researcher specializing in transgender mental health. She currently works at Triska Psychotherapy, a trans-led private practice, with a clientele that is exclusively either transgender or exploring their gender identity.


For the past two years, she has conducted research as part of Columbia University’s Division of Gender, Sexuality, and Health. While there, she researched transgender psychosocial development and quality of life after gender-affirming surgery This combination of research and clinical work has shaped her into both a research-informed clinician and a clinically-informed researcher.


Skylar holds degrees in Philosophy, Psychology, and a minor in Music from Boston University, as well as a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan.

It covers all the gender-affirming surgeries that are available (from vaginoplasty to rib reduction), what each entails, and realistic expectations around aesthetic outcomes, support needs, and recovery timelines.

This presentation also covers mental health throughout the journey, from pre-surgical preparation and working with affirming therapists to coping strategies during recovery and managing emotions through hormonal and physical changes. Finally, the presentation highlights highly regarded surgeons and surgical teams known for expertise and patient-centered care, offering guidance on how to research providers, ask questions, and make informed decisions that align with your goals.
